Just wanted to show off my first 6 trees!

Post by jrin3r »

Just wanted to show off my first batch of (6) "Wonderful" poms, planted about 14 months ago... and they are doing WONDERFUL!!!! :D

We live in a great climate for pomegranates and figs (Zone 9b) and these first poms we purchased at Costco in 5# containers are certainly surprising us with their growth. In just over a year they've gone from 2 feet tall to around 10', with lots of fruit. We plan on adding other varieties, but have not decided on which ones (any input would be appreciated!) We have somewhat of a green thumb when it comes to figs, but poms are a new venture for us. Certainly happy with the results so far..... now if only someone can share a dignified way of eating them!!

Looks nice! Thanks for sharing.
Is that a gopher cage in the ground to protect the roots?

Thanks for the responses. Yes, that is a gopher cage in the ground protecting the roots. I've been doing a pretty good job of trapping/eradicating the gophers around here, but we always use homemade hardware cloth cages on all of our plants & trees just in case! They seem to last a long time and the tree roots don't seem to have a problem with them.
We haven't tasted the fruit off of these trees yet, don't think they're quite ripe yet. We still haven't learned the exact way of telling if they're ripe or not. It's not like figs where they droop and you know it's safe to pick. So if anyone has any tips on this, would appreciate it.
We have an Eversweet tree elsewhere on the property and it's not growing as well as the Wonderful, but it has produced about 12 poms this year. We've eaten those (in the messiest way possible, reminiscent of a pie-eating contest  ) and enjoyed them. Can't wait to taste the Wonderfuls though!

Nice! Are you in a more or less humid area?

We live in the California Central Valley in the foothills at the base of Sequoia National Park, which gets quite hot but never really humid. Summers are often in the 100+. Was reading a story this morning about the history of this town that mentioned one of the first families who settled here 140 years ago grew pomegranates. Looks like I'm in good company!

For ripeness I like to wait until they begin to split. Figure that is when it is about as ripe as it will get. Rain can cause pre-mature splitting in Wonderful but once split it is time to eat them anyway. :)

What an awesome setup! I live in Fresno (sunnyside area), glad to see the San Joaquin Valley represented. I have a bunch of varieties but only my Eversweet has truly flourished like yours. The church my wife attends planted an Angel Red and it is going crazy and the fruit are amazing. If you're looking for a soft-seeded large/x-large fruit (everything at the Fresno County Fair was Angel Red/Early Wonderful) I think you should keep your eyes open for one. They sell them at Lowe's though every store in the valley (i've checked) is currently sold out.
