Pink sport of ‘wonderful’
Pink sport of ‘wonderful’
@JoshHolbrook traded these with me back in January of 2018. Unfortunately I do not have photos of the flowers. The arils are bright white/yellow with hard seeds. The flavor was a bit mild and slightly sour, but I blame much of that to growing in a pot and being a young tree. Height is about 4’. It produced several fruits but I was letting this last one go fully ripe.

Interesting! Thanks for sharing.
When people say “sport”, does it mean “a seedling of” or a “different than the mother plant” branch that was separated and became a new plant? Thanks

I noticed the skin starting to split and thought it was time to pick. 1/4 of the arils were spoiled looking under where a small crack on the skin existed.
The arils are hard. This fruit was much sweeter and more complex then the other fruit I tried from this same tree. I did not notice much of a sour cranberry flavor that I tend to taste when eating red varieties. I did notice some pink staining on some of the pith. The arils looked uniform in color (aside from the spoiled section). The skin was fairly thin.

Nice!
Yes, this variety, Shien’s Pink, came from a Wonderful rootstock and is much more cold hardy than Wonderful. My guess is that it was a seedling that was used for rootstock for some reason.
How’s Shien’s white working for you? Anything yet?
