Hello,
My name is Tom, and I live in northern Belgium.
I have two pomegranate trees that I’ve grown from seed (now 5 years old).
I’m not sure what variety they are (I think possibly Wonderful). The trees do bloom, but unfortunately, our seasons here in Belgium are too short for the fruit to fully ripen, so I never get the chance to eat them.
I plan to keep the trees, but I would like to use them as rootstock
and create a “cocktail” tree.
Similar to citrus, the rootstock can make a big difference in fruit quality.
How can I find out which variety of pomegranate I have?
I’m also looking for pomegranate budwood.
I’ve contacted some nurseries in Europe, but they prefer to sell a whole tree rather than just budwood, which is understandable.
I’ve also tried posting in Facebook groups, but without success.
I’m hoping someone here has experience with this and can help me find pomegranate budwood in Europe.
Thank you,
Pomegranate Rootstock in Belgium
Re: Pomegranate Rootstock in Belgium
Hello Tom,
Fantastic to have you here! What hardiness zone are you in? How long is your growing season? How big are the fruit getting?
Unlike citrus, little is known about the effect rootstock will play in fruit production in grafted pomegranates. But this forum is a good place to document findings. You will never be able to determine what pomegranate you have, especially if it came from seed. IE: A plant produced from a Wonderful seedling will never be a Wonderful. It will be genetically different, although likely similar. There are a few reputable sellers who are highly respected among peers in the EU who I can point you to. Send me a message and I can get you in contact with them
