Spring 2022 - record cold, wet in the PNW

Post by tarnado »

So we have had some record cold here in the Seattle area this spring. It is one of the coldest starts to spring in several decades... including a hard freeze *and light snow* in late February (highly unusual these days) and another freeze later in March which singed the leaves on my potatoes that had already sprouted.

HOWEVER the Sumbar pomegranate that I planted in a south-facing heat trap woke up and is exploding with growth. I noted some very minor dieback on a few of the thinner twigs, but I am extremely pleased with this progress so far! DARE I SAY EVEN - STOKED!

I found three or so other houses on my block here have some small pomegranates planted last spring, too. They belong to a Laotian gentleman who also gave some to his neighbors, and I think they are the Wonderful variety (he uses them to make a leaf tea). They have barely broken their buds yet.

It looks like there is some leaf-curling going on, I might have to start spraying it with some neem to get the possible mites.

That's awesome! And a very beautiful tree you have growing! My Sumbar started to wake up here in Michigan about a week ago, it was one of my best growers last season. I'll post a pic in a few days. Neem is like magic oil. It takes care of 99% of my problems. It will take care of your leaf curl.

EXTREMELY IMPORTANT UPDATE

We have flower buds!

REPEAT

WE HAVE FLOWER BUDS

The Sumbar, despite the slimy spring and sullen summer (until about 3 weeks ago), managed to triple in size and last night I discovered some flower buds. I am certain these will not develop fruit - or at least, **RIPE** fruit, but it is exciting none the less!
