WEO Pomegranate Cultivars

Post by pombazaar »

I was wondering if anyone has any detailed info on the pomegranates grown at Wolfskill Experimental Orchards. The only one I can find any real information on is WEO 42 which seems similar to Faye's Paintbrush. I'm in the process of trying to obtain cuttings for the 30+ WEO varieties that are listed to trial and publish information about them. Is anyone here growing any?

'WEO 42' and 'Faye's Paintbrush' are not the same, read this https://www.foodplace.info/Bountiful_Fi ... O+42#p6467

Also Green Sea Farms told me this "Our WEO 42 variety so far has single flowers not like the double flowers on the other ornamentals.
No fruit has developed."

So basically 'Faye's Paintbrush' only has double flowers, while most of the flowers on 'WEO 42' are not like the flowers on 'Faye's Paintbrush', also the fruit of 'WEO 42' sounds very unpleasant and very rare.

Thanks for clarifying. I've read through a few posts where Dig thought that WEO 42 was the same as Faye's Paintbrush so I assumed it was so. What do you make of the pictures of WEO 42 here? They definitely look like double flowers to me. https://crec.ifas.ufl.edu/extension/pom ... 091412.pdf

Look at the post I linked to again, I updated it so that hopefully it's easier to understand.

Just to add some interest to this topic, I have found multiple trees here in town that exhibit all the same outward expressions, ie double bi-color flowers and flower drop.

In addition to that I have seen several red sports, single red flower, that have popped from the massive trunk somewhere over the last 2 seasons. I did not trim these so I will see if anything results from the sports.

I still hold that this is weo42/faye’s paintbrush

Search https://npgsweb.ars-grin.gov/gringlobal/search.aspx for 'punica granatum weo', that shows results for some of the 'WEO Pomegranate Cultivars'

I've compiled a complete list of all known WEO varieties. Many of these do not have names and have little information associated with them. I am in the process of working with the field manager of Wolfskill at UC Davis to gather more information about them.

That’s a lot of emptiness there !
Do they allow visitors at the fruiting time? Fruit quality is what matters here

Indeed! I know that they allow visitors but I'm not sure on what basis. When I get in contact with them I will ask. Fun fact: The Incredible Pomegranate has an entire section documenting a taste report at WEO. See page 103.

@greenfig, I got in touch with the USDA today and was told that WEO does host taste tests and tours of the orchard. In the past this usually happens in October. I will send you the managers contact info so you can schedule a visit. If others here are interested we can even schedule an event on behalf of the community here and go together as a group.
