Leaf-Footed Bugs

Post by Eykca »

Just thought I'd post this. An interaction I had with Millennial Gardener. He's certainly more of a fig guy but I like his idea. And speaking of leaf-footed bugs, I was talking to a buddy who is studying entomology at CSU Fresno and he said the AG departments pomegranate trees are caked with these things too and there's nothing much you can do about them. Just remove the fruit as soon as they crack if not before. The bugs can't break the exocarp but god help you after the fruit does crack.

Wow! We don't have those guys in eastern VA - or at least I've never seen them . . . . YET!

We do have Japanese beetles - which have recently arrived to devour leaves. And they like to burrow in the female blossoms of my pomegranates. They munch on the leaves of some pom varieties . . . but not on others. ? Maybe they taste differently. Who knows. They need to GO!

My husband and I invented a 'game' that we are having fun with - while the beetles are around. We've started calling it 'Bop the Beetle'.

I suggested that instead of spraying - we find a way to remove the bugs. They are lethargic in the evening and easy to capture, but I was afraid that they'd fly out of whatever I put them in . . . so I came up with an idea. I thought I'd get a jar and 'flick' them into it, and to make sure they'd never return - I put an inch of isopropyl alcohol in the bottom of the jar. We have to pull them out of the blossoms. Flick them off of a leaf . . . sometimes 2 or 3 at a time . . . DEAD on arrival!

It doesn't take much to entertain us these days! And this might seem silly to most 'adults' . . . but it is like working a puzzle. A scavenger hunt! And we got rid of over 100 of the nasty little destroyers last evening, alone!

NOTE: Our trees are modest height, so this is doable. Stilts are always an option! LOL

I never dreamed I could grow pomegranates! I first tried Wonderful - then Grenada. In 2018 we added 14 varieties. It's an enjoyable adventure and I am glad to find others passionate about this ancient fruit!

They look mean ! I’ve been lucky so far to not see them here, I hope it stays this way. The Asian beetles are bad enough already
