So, in the middle of the second-warmest winter ever here, after a January without a single freeze, we got a sudden, unexpected snowstorm! The last measurable snow at my house was 12/7/2017.
My pomegranate just started budding out, so I thought I’d share a couple photos of the young buds and branches with snow on them. Sorry they’re a bit blurry — it’s really dark and a bit windy and my phone doesn’t do a good job.
It was 80°f yesterday. All the snow fell when it was between 35-38°F. I’m not expecting too much damage, because we’re just barely gonna be below freezing — right around 32°F tonight. But I’m bummed that we’re getting another freeze after all the buds started waking up...
They were predicting maybe a few small flurries, but the whole area got enough snow for some accumulation on grass. My deck had over 1/4" on it at one point, even though it was melting quite fast. There was even some thundersnow!

Re: Snowy Pomegranate
Yikes! That's a significant drop in temp. Still at 32F I don't think you'll see much damage, especially if the temps picked up the next day. How are the buds looking now?
Re: Snowy Pomegranate
We didn’t get a consistent freeze that night — just a patchy one. It was cold enough that there was still a bit of snow on the lawn, roof, and deck. The temperatures did pick back up, and the buds look fine and healthy to me! They haven’t appeared to get any of the browning that typically follows freeze damage.pombazaar wrote: Mon Feb 10, 2020 3:34 pm Yikes! That's a significant drop in temp. Here it is today, 2/13. All the buds look basically 100% undamaged, fortunately! All the pomegranates now are pushing buds pretty well, despite the fairly cool weather the past week.pombazaar wrote: Mon Feb 10, 2020 3:34 pm Yikes! That's a significant drop in temp.
