Coffee grounds and Pomegranate plants

Post by PomegranateKings »

Hello all!

There is a problem here with squirrel(s) digging in plant containers, including those with pomegranate plants. As I believe that they are repelled by coffee grounds and incorporating some such in the plantings might be helpful therefore, I was contemplating adding some. However, since I am aware that some plants do not like/benefit from them, and that their effect on plants and their ecosystems (incl. bacteria, earthworms...) in general is somewhat unclear and debated yet, I figured I would try to get some more information.

Anyone here have knowledge, experience re use and effect of coffee grounds in pomegranate cultivation? Beneficial? Neutral? Otherwise? With regard to all matters, from soil fertility, pH, drainage...to effects on pesky critters...?

Thanks in advance for any assistance you may extend.

If your looking for something that would repel them I would think fox urine would work better.
It is a big scary animal that eats them that they would smell and be worried about.
I have seen it sold in stores and asked "why would someone want that?"
They said for this reason, to create a scent of a predator that makes rabbits and rodents not want to stay in that area.

Don't know if it works but seems like it would do more than coffee grounds.

You said "containers". Do you literally mean containers, like pots?
If so can't you just put half inch wire or chicken wire around the base so they can't get in there?

I’m not sure that coffee grounds will help your squirrel problem very much but throwing some grounds in a container should have little impact to the soil. Coffee is acidic so do keep that in mind. Overall impact should be little though.
