Angel Red is flowering!

Post by greenfig »

So many flowers!
I hope at least 20% with turn into fruits. Many of the flowers are male.

How many of these ended up bearing fruit? Most of the flowers on my trees this year were male also. I’m thinking this may be my worst performing season yet. Two confirmed fruit that will ripen by November, possibly three lol

Quite a lot!
I need to water better next year since the fruit is on a smaller side but I see many.

I picked up a few ripe looking fruits that started to shrink and shrivel. I was disappointed from what I saw inside, they were not deep red and not fully ripe :(
Last year Angel Red was underperforming and I thought the tree was too young, this year isn’t too much better . I have a suspicion that it doesn’t like our hot and dry climate.
I think I may replace it with something else.
In contrast, Ariana, Parfianka, Desertnyi, Vkusnyi, Sirenevyi perform nicely.

The photos that you shared last year the arils were darker.

She grows Angel red in a similar climate too you, Also in California, yet up to the date of this video she kept the plant in a pot in an area with limited hours of direct sun light, as you can see because of that limited hours of sunlight the arils on hers are much lighter than the arils on yours

Besides sunlight hours another thing that can effect aril color is winter temperatures, and even nutritional differences can, yet I think in your case winter 2020/2021 was better for darker aril color, than winter 2021/2022 was for aril color. Some pomegranate cultivars get more easily effected by winter temperatures than others.

As far as the skin the same thing happened to the pomegranates on our 'Salavatski', for us I don't think that it was dry heat because it was the pomegranates that ripened after the weather started getting cool that shrunk and shriveled like that. I think that it has something to do with the fruit not having enough heat during ripening and they are hanging too long, and if you leave them on long enough they will rot inside even though they did not actually ripen properly. I myself would give the plant at least two more years

After tasting more fruit, I decided to remove the tree, it’s not good enough to keep. The taste it subpar, the arils are small and hard to remove.
If that’s your only tree, maybe you will be happy but given the options, you can get a better variety.
