Someone suggested to use hair spray for pumpkin protection:

I say no. Most pumpkins are sold for carving and seed roasting. They're rind is also incredibly thick so permeating the inside is much less likely if you were to consume the insides. Even then, I still wouldn't risk it lol.

I would never spray anything toxic on anything that I eat. Netting, caging, or traps work way better. If you wanted to use something as a deterrent, sulfur or hot pepper spray are known critter repellents.

My impression was that hair sprays were not considered toxic. The stuff you spray on your hair gets onto your skin and eyes and absorbed by your body. Anything toxic would be very harmful and couldn’t be approved.
On poms the spray would be for the last 2-4 weeks , when the critters become interested in the fruit. It dries up quickly and the skin is hard.
I am not for or against it yet, I am trying to find out if the spray can be considered at all.
