Re: Upright poms?
Thanks! I read about several different variations of Purple Heart with different flavor profiles. How do you like yours? Can you describe the fruit?
My Purple Heart (AKA 'Sharp Velvet') is only in its 3rd summer, and has not set fruit yet. It was very late to leaf out, being one of my less hardy ...

Re: Salavatski & Sirenevyi Rooted Cuttings
I have a Sirenevyi and tasted the first fruit last year. Was very good. The pom is very late though, the latest I've seen, you will eat them by Christmas at least.

Re: Squirrels: the bane of my existence
I think they are about ½" square. Not big enough for mice or rats. Bees, yes!

Re: Upright poms?
My most upright pom, out of 25, is 'Purple Heart'. Branching is short, and seems more brittle. Very unusual compared to all the rest in the orchard.
I tried 'topping' it to get more lower growth . . . but didn't do any good! It's upright and stubborn!

Re: Leaf-Footed Bugs
Wow! We don't have those guys in eastern VA - or at least I've never seen them . . . . YET!
We do have Japanese beetles - which have recently arrived to devour leaves. And they like to burrow in the female blossoms of my pomegranates. They munch on the leaves of some pom varieties . . . but not on ...

Re: Squirrels: the bane of my existence
pombazaar, I think that Eykca's idea will help to keep them off your tree. Although, you mentioned a retaining wall. So, even with the metal 'baffle' - and trying to keep the lower branches at an 'unreachable' height - those little devils can jump! And they will get to the tree from the wall.

Re: Big Cuttings
Hello Everyone! I have a question about rooting pomegranates from very new soft shoots. 'Little Cuttings'.
This year I tried something new. Instead of waiting until early next spring, I decided to remove the soft water sprouts forming on the interior of the shrubs - all of those growing towards ...

Re: Fruiting Behavior
Hello from eastern VA. (and hi Alan!)
I am very interested in this conversation, because the fruiting habits of my pomegranates are baffling to me, as well . . . even though I have two well-developed shrubs which fruit fairly consistently. I am still confused when it comes to deciding whether to ...
