Pineapple guavas (feijoas) make me happy!

Post by jrin3r »

Just showing off what brought me joy this afternoon!! I was walking by my feijoa bushes and noticed that my fruit is finally ripening and dropping. I expected them next month, so I am quite pleased. I introduced them to two of my neighbors and they tasted them for the first time and loved them. I'm posting a couple pictures of what's ripened so far.... and FYI I already ate them all

Very nice! I love them too :)
What variety is that?

Last weekend I bought what appears to be Mammoth guava. They were the size of avocado! I will try to attach a photo

Wow, love the size of those feijoas!! We're hoping to get other varieties - large ones specifically - and I remember when we lived in New Zealand (and feijoas are EVERYWHERE there... even yummy feijoa ice cream!) that the large ones were Apollo, I think (?) We'll be looking into it before we make any other purchases.

We're unsure of the variety of feijoa we currently have. The two bushes were purchased at a big box hardware store about 6 years ago and were (I think) just labeled as sellowiana.

I wish more people here were familiar with this fruit... guess we'll try to change that!! :D

When you visit Southern California, take a walk in a residential neighborhood. The feijoa plants are very common, as well as the tropical guavas, figs and pomegranates :)

I haven't been south of Bakersfield in over 20 years, but now that I'm semi-retired I've been hoping to get down there to check out the nurseries :D
So if I do make it, I'll definitely keep my eyes open!

I can't wait to try pineapple guavas. I just planted two in the ground this spring in my GH alongside my citrus, poms, and figs (and a chilean guava!). I think the two varieties I have are Nikita and Apollo. Really nice looking bushes but still very small. I'm really thinking I'll like them a lot when I finally get to try the fruit based on what others have said

Did you buy the feijoas from a nursery or did you propagate them yourself? We're growing two guava plants on our property (not counting the feijoa, since that's not technically a "guava"), one is a strawberry guava and the other is a tropic pink guava. The strawberry guava can handle our winters, but the tropic pink dies back to the ground every year. Consequently, we've never tasted its fruit! The strawberry guava is awesome, though. We were told that guavas won't grow here (presumably because of the winters, we're 9b) but we're proving them wrong

Some people say that they have had success if you pick a best location in the yard, and Edible Landscaping says you need to protect for Zone 7

Have you tried them in your neck of the woods? Supposedly they don't fruit if the low is below 15 the winter prior, but 2 or the last 3 winters up here have only seen as low as 17.
