Re: Need Help re Raised bed

Up here in Austin on the edge of the plateau, I haven’t noticed issues from soil — poms seem to grow fine in my native, "extremely stony clay" (as described by the soil survey for Travis Co.) or in that nasty red clay contractors bring in as fill. Currently, my inground plants are both in ...

Re: And the Winter in z10a is over!

Same here in Central TX — zone 8b/9a ish. They’ve been leafing out for a couple weeks now and have several inches of new growth on them. The past few winters have been extremely cold for us, with lows of 6° in February 2021, a long duration freeze in January 2022, and a low of 14° in December 2022. ...

Re: Record Cold

As a follow up from this: my in-ground ‘Red Silk’ fruited for the first time this year. I wasn’t expecting it to and it flowered really late — like August. It somehow made some fruit that got fairly ripe and were shockingly good for how little time they had on the tree! The arils were definitely not...

Re: Leaf Curl

@glideher - Yours to me does not look like leaf curl due to spider mites or Aceria granati as @gspom79 mentioned. All of the previous posts in this thread regarding leaf curl are 100% due to mites. @greenfig, @pogrmman - I still hold that neem oil is the best solution to ward off mites. Most of the...

Re: Big Cuttings

@pogrmman, how are those cuttings from last year doing? If you have a picture it would be awesome to see the progress! Unfortunately, I lost them during the big 2021 freeze. It was growing great, but I had them inside our house and we lost water and power. I had too many things to try and keep wet ...

Re: Record Cold

Well, I got the big one cut down to the ground. It’s a shame, but you can see from how fat the growth rings are that it began growing pretty amazingly fast as soon as hurricane Harvey knocked over the big red oak formerly shading it out. Re: Yerba Mate - how cold hardy?

One thing I’ll note is that I can confirm yaupon can take down to at least 5°-10°F without damage. During the extreme cold this year, a handful of them took minor tip burn on young growth but most were completely undamaged. Now, with respect to mate, I’m hoping to begin growing some this year to tes...

Re: Record Cold

I can confirm this tree is still alive, but it did get cut back to the ground. Here’s some sprouts coming up: 54DB54AF-DC90-42A4-AABD-8218B7C029B9.jpeg I’m probably gonna have to do a loooooot of pruning to keep it from just becoming a mess of suckers. Fortunately, that gives me a chance to re-train...

Re: Loquats

I’ve been doing some reading about loquat cultivation, and stumbled across this interesting document from Spain (in Spanish). I’ve found out some interesting things: like how they submit the trees to water stress during the summer to make the flowering more uniform. Judging by their flowering figure...

Re: Record Cold

I'm super sad to hear this, I was really hoping your tree would make it. I may have some leftover cuttings from this season I can send you so you can regrow. How long are you going to wait until you pull it? Thank you for the generous offer! But I’ll be fine. My habit of compulsively taking cutting...
