My most upright pom, out of 25, is 'Purple Heart'. Branching is short, and seems more brittle. Very unusual compared to all the rest in the orchard.

I tried 'topping' it to get more lower growth . . . but didn't do any good! It's upright and stubborn!

Thanks! I read about several different variations of Purple Heart with different flavor profiles. How do you like yours? Can you describe the fruit?

My Purple Heart (AKA 'Sharp Velvet') is only in its 3rd summer, and has not set fruit yet. It was very late to leaf out, being one of my less hardy pomegranates. When it did, the new growth was very 'tall'. I pruned it back, in height,so that I could reach the top of the tree.

I put it, and all of the more 'tender' trees in one row, on the south end of the orchard. All of these took a lot more time to 'wake up' and look alive this spring. It did not have many blossoms - along with Austin, Ambrosia and Eversweet. However, my cold-hardy poms were loaded with flowers and set fruit for the first time.
I will report back when Purple Heart and the others (hopefully) produce!

I can second the Sharp Velvet being super late. I have 13 varieties and the Sharp Velvet was in full bloom with no more than 2 or 3 left on any other single tree... crazy stuff.
